TOKYO, Japan: U.S. President Joe Biden said this week that he supports calls for Japan to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, according to Japanese public television station NHK.
Biden is on his first visit to Japan since becoming president.
Calls for the UN Security Council, where both Russia and China are permanent members, to be reformed have been increasing.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, in remarks at a press conference, detailed the "necessity to reform and strengthen the United Nations, including the Security Council, which bears an important responsibility for the peace and stability of the international community," and said that Biden was supportive of Japan's position.
"The president stated that the United States will support Japan becoming a permanent member of a reformed security council," Kishida said.
The Security Council has five permanent members, including China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
