ANN ARBOR, Michigan: Some 375 University of Michigan students have been banned from entering school buildings because they have not taken Covid tests.
The students had their electronic identification cards deactivated, which are required to be scanned when entering buildings.
Prior to deactivating the identification cards, emails were sent to the targeted students to explain the action. Buildings students are banned from include those housing classes, laboratories or even social activities.
Due to the pandemic, the majority of classes remain virtual.
"The notification sent on Tuesday should not come as a surprise to the recipients," according to Sarah Daniels, associate dean of students, commenting in a university communications. "Prior to this notification, students were sent reminders (via campus systems) that they needed to complete their weekly test.."
Not being allowed into buildings is one of the measures the university has enacted. Other options for those students not being tested include academic probation, canceling housing contracts and formal student conduct hearings.
To have their privileges reinstated, students can be tested or submit a request for an exemption.
Of note, 98 percent of all students living in resident halls have complied with testing requirements.
